The eagerly anticipated student loan initiative is set to kick off this Friday, catering to 1.2 million students enrolled in federal tertiary institutions nationwide, as announced by Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund.

Sawyerr disclosed this during a pre-application sensitization press briefing held in Abuja on Monday, highlighting that students in federal universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and technical colleges will be the primary beneficiaries in the initial phase.

This milestone follows the approval by both the Senate and the House of Representatives after reviewing the report from the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

Below are the step-by-step instructions on how to register for the student loan program:

Visit www.nelf.gov.ng
Click on the “Apply Now” button
Proceed by clicking on “Get Started”
Answer the questions provided and affirm your Nigerian nationality
Verify your educational details, including selecting your school from a dropdown menu and providing your matriculation number
Validate your JAMB details by clicking on “Verify with JAMB” and entering the required information
Create an account by providing your email address, password, and confirming the password
Verify your email by clicking on the verification link sent to your inbox, completing the account creation process.
Once successfully registered, log in using your credentials and follow these steps:

Enter your email address and password to log in
Proceed to update your contact details, including your phone number, residential address, state of residence, and local government area
Update your educational details by selecting your institution and inputting your matriculation number
Proceed to input your BVN, select your bank name, and enter your account number to verify your account details
Save changes to complete your profile.
To apply for the loan:

Click on the “Request for Student Loan” button
Choose the type of loan you require and click continue
Upload necessary documents, such as the admission letter (compulsory), student ID, and institution invoice (optional)
Agree to the terms and conditions, and submit your application
Check the status of your application by clicking on the “Loans” button.
