Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Pretoria (UP)
Since January 2014, the University of Pretoria (UP) has partnered with the Mastercard Foundation to provide life-changing scholarship opportunities to academically gifted young Africans. This collaboration aims to nurture future leaders by offering comprehensive educational support to students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UP is designed to empower exceptional individuals who are committed to effecting positive change in their communities. The program provides full financial support to students accepted into postgraduate studies at UP. In line with the Foundation’s vision, scholars are expected to return to their home countries upon graduation and contribute meaningfully to the development of their societies.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the scholarship:
- Be a citizen of any African country.
- Have applied for and received admission to study at the University of Pretoria at the Undergraduate, Honours, or Master’s level.
- Final applications for all eligible students must be submitted by 30 September 2024.
- The program is primarily targeted at African youth experiencing significant socio-economic hardships. This includes refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and individuals with disabilities who aspire to pursue higher education.
- Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership potential and a commitment to service. This may be reflected through participation in school initiatives, community projects, or religious organizations.
- Academic excellence is a key criterion. Applicants should have a consistent record of outstanding academic achievement.
What the Scholarship Covers
Successful applicants will benefit from a fully funded scholarship package which includes:
- Full tuition fees
- On-campus accommodation
- Prescribed textbooks and learning materials
- Access to mentoring, career counselling, and leadership training
- A return flight to the scholar’s country of origin (where necessary)
