Job Title: Workshop and Field Engineer

Department/Unit: Fleet Management
Reports To: Workshop Manager
Direct Reports: Superintendents and Technicians


Overall Purpose and Objectives

The primary responsibility of the Workshop and Field Engineer is to ensure that all maintenance and repair work in both the workshop and field is conducted efficiently and effectively.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintenance Evaluation:
    • Assess maintenance work regularly to ensure completion within established timeframes using PM module and fleet tracking reports. (Daily)
  2. Performance Monitoring:
    • Oversee the daily performance of superintendents and report efficiency metrics to the Head of Department (HOD). (Daily)
  3. Operational Readiness:
    • Maintain an optimal number of operational equipment for field and factory cane yard use. (Daily)
  4. Workshop Supervision:
    • Monitor all workshop activities and oversee various maintenance types to ensure smooth operations. (Daily)
  5. Problem Resolution:
    • Address unresolved issues, troubleshoot maintenance problems, and recommend corrective actions. (Daily)
  6. Intervention Reviews:
    • Review daily intervention and breakdown reports from all superintendents and submit them for final review by the HOD. (Daily)
  7. Workload Coordination:
    • Manage incoming maintenance work, ensuring it aligns with workload and complies with reliability and inspection requirements. (Daily)
  8. Spare Parts Management:
    • Monitor spare parts consumption, approve Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) spares, and ensure effective utilization. (Daily)
  9. Equipment Inspections:
    • Conduct random checks on equipment performance and inspect for faults or malfunctions before releasing them from the workshop. (Periodic)
  10. Team Supervision:
    • Oversee the roles of mechanical superintendents/supervisors and ensure adherence to OEM-recommended maintenance activities. (Daily)
  11. Mechanical Updates:
    • Submit section updates on PM modules, daily report comments, and mechanical resource utilization reports to the HOD. (Daily)
  12. Acting Role:
    • Act as a reliever for the HOD and authorize mechanical tool utilization and attendance records when required. (Periodic)

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  1. Mechanical Repairs:
    • Manage field and in-shop repairs for mechanical harvesters and transport trucks. (10%)
  2. Material Management:
    • Prepare and follow up on materials needed for cane harvesters and transport trucks. (10%)
  3. Maintenance Planning:
    • Plan and execute various maintenance programs for harvesters and loading/offloading machines. (25%)
  4. Job Delegation:
    • Classify, prioritize, and delegate jobs to appropriate personnel. (10%)
  5. Safety Standards:
    • Develop and enforce safety policies to minimize accidents and injuries. (10%)
  6. Diagnostic Equipment Usage:
    • Supervise the use of electronic diagnostic tools for equipment servicing. (10%)
  7. Accident Assessment:
    • Conduct preliminary assessments of accident damage and coordinate necessary repairs. (5%)
  8. Staff Management:
    • Interview, train, evaluate, and discipline staff as necessary, ensuring proper skills training. (5%)
  9. Resource Management:
    • Ensure accuracy in shop and resource management as part of internal QA/QC processes. (10%)
  10. Training and Discipline:
    • Train and discipline subordinates as necessary to maintain team efficiency. (5%)

Job Specifications and Requirements

  • Educational Requirements: HND or B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Qualifications: Any additional professional certifications are an advantage.
  • Experience: 5 to 7 years of field operations experience in maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting for machinery, harvesters, and heavy equipment.
