The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has revealed its intention to enlist additional aid workers with the aim of enhancing the efficiency of humanitarian response.
The ministry emphasized that this employment initiative is temporary, aligning with the Federal Government’s commitment to curbing unemployment in the nation.
As reported by The PUNCH on August 8, 2023, Nigeria holds the highest unemployment rate globally at 33.3%, as per the latest statistics from the World of Statistics. Following closely are South Africa at 32.9% and Iran at 15.55%.
The report indicates that countries like Qatar (0.1%), Cambodia (0.36%), and Niger (0.5%) boast the lowest unemployment rates.
On December 21, 2023, The PUNCH highlighted that the youth unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 24 increased to 7.2% in Q2 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, compared to 6.9% in Q1 2023.
During a courtesy visit by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Beta Edu, clarified that the recruitment plan aims to enhance humanitarian response time.
Edu stated, “This initiative not only addresses unemployment but also elevates our response efficiency. The initial hiring period is three months, extendable to six months or a maximum of one year if the crisis persists.” She emphasized the advantage of recruiting individuals with expertise in handling humanitarian crises.
