Role Overview

The Database Administrator will ensure the performance, security, and integrity of ECOWAS’s databases. Under the direct supervision of the PO System Acquisition and Implementation, the role involves database design, troubleshooting, backup management, and security enforcement to ensure efficient data accessibility and protection.

Key Responsibilities

Database Management & Security

  • Develop and maintain databases to ensure high availability, integrity, and security.
  • Design user access policies to distribute data efficiently while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Implement security measures to safeguard databases against unauthorized access.
  • Perform routine backups and conduct periodic restore tests for data recovery.
  • Enforce ECOWAS security and compliance policies in database management.

Optimization & Performance Tuning

  • Minimize database downtime and optimize query performance.
  • Monitor and enhance database efficiency and capacity.
  • Implement and manage failover environments for disaster recovery.
  • Perform regular performance tests and resolve data access challenges.

Database Development & Implementation

  • Design, test, and implement new database structures and applications.
  • Collaborate with developers, project managers, and IT teams on database solutions.
  • Work with commercial database management tools such as SQL Server and Oracle.
  • Implement MapReduce jobs and queries in HDFS environments.
  • Automate and document database processes for improved efficiency.

Technical Support & Collaboration

  • Provide user support on database structure, function, and best practices.
  • Train users on database applications and prepare operational manuals.
  • Maintain configuration management of database environments.
  • Develop policies for database security, performance, and access control.
  • Assist in troubleshooting technical issues related to databases.

Academic Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems Management, or a related IT field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing large-scale database services.
  • Expertise in SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and other RDBMS platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with MySQL database administration.
  • Knowledge of MapReduce, Hive, Flume, Oozie, and Zookeeper.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Bash, Korn, Perl, Python).

Age Requirement

  • Applicants must be under 50 years old (not applicable to internal candidates).

  • Ability to draft reports, create technical documentation, and conduct training sessions.
  • Fluency in one of the official ECOWAS languages (English, French, or Portuguese); knowledge of an additional language is an advantage.
