The European Union (EU), in partnership with the Zuma International Film Festival and the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival, has introduced a short film competition to support and inspire emerging filmmakers across the country. This initiative seeks to enhance participants’ understanding of modern filmmaking techniques and familiarize them with current industry trends. Additionally, the EU will organize a filmmaking Impact Lab for aspiring filmmakers during both festivals.
In a press release from the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, it was announced that the top six submissions in each festival’s competition—Zuma in Abuja and Eastern Nigeria in Enugu—will be showcased at their respective events, set to take place later this month and early next month. The creators of the best short film at each festival will also be awarded a cash prize of one million naira each, courtesy of the EU.
The press release further highlighted that the six selected filmmakers would have the chance to engage with industry leaders, gaining valuable insights and constructive feedback. Entrants are required to create a short film lasting no longer than three minutes, focusing on specific themes: “Digital Renaissance – Leveraging Digital Technology to Power Creativity” for Zuma International Film Festival and “Youth, Democracy, and Inclusive Society” for the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival.
After screening the shortlisted entries, the overall winners will be announced at the festivals. The competition is exclusively open to individuals aged 20 to 35 and must adhere to this year’s festival themes. Organizers stated that entries would be evaluated based on predetermined criteria such as alignment with the theme, storytelling, creativity, message, and technical quality (sound and visuals).
The Impact Lab, led by internationally recognized, award-winning filmmakers, will offer masterclasses designed for emerging creators who wish to use their craft to address pressing social issues. Topics covered in the sessions include Impact Storytelling, Securing Funding and Distribution for Impact Films, and Short Documentary Grant Writing.
