The Role

Position: Assistant Vice President (AVP), Risk and Compliance Operations

As the AVP of Risk and Compliance Operations, you will be integral to ensuring the company adheres to financial regulations and maintains operational integrity. You will oversee teams responsible for monitoring transactions and accounts to mitigate risks such as fraud, money laundering, and terrorist financing. This position emphasizes the development and implementation of transaction monitoring strategies powered by advanced analytics and technology. Close collaboration with internal stakeholders is vital to strengthen controls against money laundering and terrorist financing.

The ideal candidate will bring exceptional leadership skills, in-depth knowledge of transaction monitoring in the card payments space, and a dedication to maintaining stringent compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement robust risk management policies, procedures, and controls to identify, evaluate, and address risks across various organizational functions.
  • Lead and manage a team of managers, analysts, and specialists, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and industry best practices.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits, recommending improvements to existing controls to address emerging risks.
  • Build strong partnerships with regulatory bodies, industry stakeholders, and internal teams to stay updated on regulatory changes and trends.
  • Manage regulatory reviews and audits, ensuring timely and accurate responses to inquiries and findings.
  • Create mechanisms to monitor and report key risk indicators, providing valuable insights to senior management.
  • Regularly review transaction monitoring controls and workflows, implementing necessary improvements.
  • Establish performance metrics to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of risk management strategies.
  • Collaborate with product teams to enhance system controls, introduce new features, and design compliance-first solutions.
  • Present detailed reports to senior leadership, outlining trends, insights, and recommended risk mitigation strategies.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Compliance, Legal, and Operations, to align with industry standards and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is mandatory. An advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CFE, CAMS, CFCS) is highly desirable.
  • At least 12 years of experience in the financial services sector, particularly in transaction monitoring, AML compliance, or fraud detection.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of AML/CTF regulations, including Nigerian and international regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated passion for innovation and continuous improvement in transaction monitoring processes.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing high-performing teams.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and guide team members effectively.
  • Collaborative approach, capable of working seamlessly with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and evaluate risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, maintaining a commitment to operational excellence and adaptability.
