Federal Government begins Distribution of 2,000 CNG-Powered Tricycles

Nigeria’s Bold Step Towards Green Mobility: FG Begins Distribution of 2,000 CNG-Powered Tricycles

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation and youth empowerment, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, has officially launched the distribution of 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles.

The unveiling, which took place on Tuesday at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, was a key event marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. More than just a transportation upgrade, this initiative is a strategic effort to reduce fuel costs, create employment, and promote clean energy adoption across the country.

A Game-Changer for Transportation and Youth Employment

The rising cost of transportation in Nigeria has been a major challenge, especially for small business owners, daily commuters, and transport operators. Traditional fuel prices continue to fluctuate, putting financial strain on the masses. In response, the Tinubu-led administration is championing the shift to CNG-powered vehicles, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.

At the launch event, Michael Oluwagbemi, Project Director of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of the initiative. He emphasized that the distribution of these tricycles is a direct fulfillment of President Bola Tinubu’s promise to make transportation more affordable, create jobs, and reduce environmental pollution.

But the impact goes beyond just providing vehicles. Oluwagbemi proudly revealed that these CNG-powered tricycles were locally assembled in Shagamu, Ogun State. This means job creation not just in transportation but also in manufacturing, maintenance, and technical support.

“Today, we are delivering on Mr. President’s promise by rolling out 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles. What makes this initiative even more special is that these tricycles were fully assembled here in Nigeria. In just the past three weeks, over 50 young Nigerians have been trained in assembling these vehicles, and many more will be involved as production continues.”

“Beyond just the tricycles, this initiative is about creating jobs. Thousands of youths will find employment not just as operators but in the maintenance and efficient deployment of these vehicles. This marks an important step towards a cleaner, gas-powered future for Nigeria—one that turns our underutilized natural gas resources into wealth and opportunity.”

Government’s Vision for Youth Empowerment

One of the most significant aspects of this initiative is its focus on youth development. Recognizing the struggles faced by young Nigerians in securing stable employment, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development is positioning this project as a stepping stone for economic growth.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, Minister for Youth Development, acknowledged that transportation remains a critical challenge for many Nigerians. She expressed optimism that the initiative would ease mobility challenges, reduce costs for commuters, and provide a fresh avenue for young entrepreneurs to thrive.

“These tricycles will go a long way in addressing the transportation struggles faced by both transporters and citizens. In this critical time of economic reform, this intervention serves as a major relief, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for young people.”

She also emphasized the role of the National Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) in providing financial support for young Nigerians interested in the transportation business. Additionally, the Ministry plans to work closely with P-CNGi to scale up the initiative, with an ambitious target of distributing 2 million CNG-powered tricycles nationwide in the future.

The Road Ahead: A Greener, More Sustainable Nigeria

The shift to CNG-powered vehicles is a bold and necessary step for Nigeria’s economic and environmental future. With petrol and diesel prices at record highs, CNG provides a cleaner, cheaper alternative that will benefit not just transporters but also ordinary Nigerians relying on public transport.

Beyond cost savings, this initiative represents a shift towards sustainability. By reducing reliance on petrol and diesel, Nigeria can cut down harmful emissions, contributing to a healthier environment.

As more CNG-powered vehicles hit the roads, the benefits will extend beyond transportation and employment—they will pave the way for a more energy-efficient, self-sufficient Nigeria.

With the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding this initiative, the future of Nigeria’s transport sector looks greener, cleaner, and more economically viable.
