Position Overview
ECOWAS is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join its Information and Technology Services Directorate. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, managing, securing, and optimizing ECOWAS database systems to ensure efficiency, security, and data integrity. This role involves troubleshooting database issues, managing backups, and ensuring smooth system performance to support the organization’s technological infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
Database Design, Security & Performance Optimization
- Develop and maintain robust database systems that align with ECOWAS operational needs.
- Implement strict security measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Optimize database performance, ensuring efficient data retrieval, storage, and processing.
- Minimize downtime and maintain system availability through proactive database monitoring and tuning.
- Troubleshoot technical issues affecting database accessibility, security, and performance.
Data Management, Backup & Disaster Recovery
- Ensure reliable data storage solutions, preventing data loss and corruption.
- Conduct regular system backups, maintaining redundancy for disaster recovery preparedness.
- Design and execute high-speed recovery strategies to restore data in the event of system failures.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive disaster recovery plans, ensuring business continuity.
Database Development & Implementation
- Create new database structures or modify existing ones to accommodate organizational needs.
- Collaborate with IT teams, software developers, and project managers to integrate databases with enterprise applications.
- Utilize advanced database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL to enhance data management.
- Implement big data processing tools such as Apache Hive, MapReduce, Flume, Oozie, and Zookeeper.
- Ensure compatibility between ECOWAS database systems and emerging technological advancements.
Technical Support & Training
- Provide technical support to users, ensuring seamless interaction with ECOWAS database systems.
- Train staff members on proper database usage, security protocols, and best practices.
- Develop user manuals and technical documentation for reference and training purposes.
- Collaborate with IT specialists to address system-related challenges and maintain database efficiency.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems Management, or a related discipline from a recognized university.
- At least five (5) years of hands-on experience managing large-scale databases.
- Proficiency in relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
- Hands-on experience in data replication, performance tuning, and query optimization.
- Knowledge of big data analytics tools and HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System).
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Bash, Korn for database automation.
Age Requirement
- Applicants must be under 50 years old at the time of application. (This does not apply to internal candidates.)

- Proficiency in one of ECOWAS’s official languages (English, French, or Portuguese). (Knowledge of an additional language is an advantage.)

Salary & Benefits
- Annual Salary Range:
- UA49,106.81 / USD77,480.72 (entry-level)
- UA56,591.37 / USD89,289.87 (based on experience and qualifications)
