The Nigerian federal government has recently introduced the NDDC Youth Internship Scheme. This initiative, spearheaded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), aims to involve 10,000 young people from the Niger Delta in a new program. Senate President Godswill Akpabio explained that the primary goal of this scheme is to improve the skills of participants, who will receive a monthly stipend of N50,000 during the initial phase.
Akpabio also noted that despite various challenges, the NDDC has made notable progress in enhancing the quality of life in the Niger Delta. He assured that the commission will now receive its full statutory allocations, paving the way for further development.
During a recent event in Port Harcourt, Akpabio highlighted that the NDDC has launched five major projects, including infrastructure improvements such as roads, bridges, and electricity.
NDDC Chairman Mr. Chiedu Ebie emphasized the commission’s dedication to completing projects that benefit the region and align with the 8-Point Presidential Priorities and the NDDC Act of 2000. He expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for passing the 2024 budget, which facilitates project execution.
NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku discussed the shift in the Niger Delta from militant activism to intellectual pursuits. He pointed out that the NDDC’s Holistic Opportunity Projects of Engagement (HOPE) have provided skills training and established a digital database of youth information.
Looking ahead, Ogbuku mentioned the NDDC’s collaboration with the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce to train youth and young entrepreneurs, and its plans to partner with the Bank of Industry to support small and medium-sized enterprises. He encouraged Niger Deltans to avoid protests that could disrupt regional stability and development.
