Applications Open for the Green Youth Upskilling Program (GYUP) by Oando Foundation

The Green Youth Upskilling Program (GYUP) is a forward-looking initiative that seeks to empower 25 young Nigerians with practical skills and resources essential for building careers in green and technical industries.

The program is part of a broader effort to foster Nigeria’s journey toward an environmentally sustainable and inclusive economy by nurturing innovation, building entrepreneurial capacity, and promoting technical expertise among youth.

Target Participants

GYUP is looking for committed and enthusiastic young people who are eager to explore opportunities in the green economy. Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Between 20 and 35 years
  • Location: Must reside in Lagos State
  • Education: At least a Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE)
  • Experience/Interest: While a background in solar energy, electrical work, mechanical trades, recycling, or climate-smart agriculture is beneficial, it is not a strict requirement. A strong desire to learn and grow in these sectors is most important.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the program, candidates must:

  • Be Nigerian citizens within the specified age group
  • Have completed a minimum of secondary education
  • Show clear interest in technical and green-related fields
  • Be fully available to participate in all training and mentoring sessions (online or onsite)
  • Submit a complete application before the deadline
  • (Optional but valuable): Have prior exposure to green or technical work—whether through internships, volunteering, informal jobs, or self-directed learning

Program Benefits

Selected participants will gain:

  • Hands-on training in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, recycling innovations, and climate-related technologies
  • Mentorship from professionals in the green sector and access to a network of industry leaders
  • Opportunities to access seed grants or funding for environmentally focused projects
  • Visibility and exposure to showcase their ideas and initiatives
  • A peer network of like-minded individuals driving change within their communities

Application & Selection Stages

The recruitment process is organized into four phases:

1. Application & Document Submission
Applicants must submit:

  • A completed application form
  • An up-to-date CV or brief personal profile
  • A statement of interest (up to 300 words) explaining:
    • Motivation for joining the program
    • Any relevant experience in green/technical fields
    • Career goals after completing the program
  • Optional supporting documents like references, certificates, or images showcasing past work or learning

2. Screening & Shortlisting
Applications will be reviewed by a panel based on:

  • Documentation completeness and relevance
  • Interest and motivation
  • Previous exposure to relevant sectors
  • Potential for long-term impact and personal growth

3. Interviews
Shortlisted candidates will attend either virtual or in-person interviews. Assessment will focus on:

  • Level of commitment and availability
  • Communication and clarity of vision
  • Willingness to contribute to and benefit from the program

4. Final Selection
Twenty-five candidates will be selected to participate, with an additional 5–10 placed on a waitlist.

  • Female applicants and initiatives led by women
  • Individuals from underrepresented or underserved communities
  • Persons living with disabilities
  • A diverse mix of participants from across Lagos’ local communities
