The Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship offers a prestigious opportunity for a select number of applicants to be nominated by their home country’s embassy, allowing them to pursue academic studies in Japan-based institutions. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Japan. Those who hold dual nationality must renounce their Japanese citizenship before arriving in Japan.
  • Age Limit: Applicants should have been born on or after April 2, 1990.
  • Academic and Professional Requirements: Candidates must have graduated from a university or teacher training institution, with a minimum of five years of professional teaching experience by April 1, 2025.
  • Japanese Language Proficiency: While prior proficiency in Japanese is not mandatory, applicants must demonstrate a strong willingness and commitment to learning the Japanese language during their studies.
  • Health: Applicants are required to be in good physical and mental health, supported by a certified medical certificate.
  • Arrival: Scholars must arrive in Japan within the specified time frame, typically two weeks before their program commences.
  • Visa: Successful candidates must secure a “Student” visa before entering Japan and maintain this status for the duration of their stay.

Benefits

  • Monthly Allowance: Scholars will receive a monthly stipend of 143,000 yen. Additionally, they will be eligible for a supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen, depending on the region.
  • Education Costs: MEXT will cover the costs associated with the entrance exam, matriculation, and tuition fees at the host university.
  • Travel Expenses: MEXT will also cover the cost of international travel from the applicant’s home country to Japan.

Required Documents

To apply for the scholarship, applicants must submit the following documents:

  1. Application Form: Complete the standard MEXT application form.
  2. Placement Preference Form: Indicating the preferred institution or study program in Japan.
  3. Certified Academic Transcripts: Including all academic records from the last university or teacher training school attended.
  4. Diploma: The final diploma or certificate of completion from the most recent institution attended.
  5. Employment Certificate: A document confirming the applicant’s current employment status.
  6. Recommendation Letter: A letter from the applicant’s immediate supervisor at work.
  7. Medical Certificate: To confirm the applicant’s physical fitness for study.
